Baptism
Baptism is the sign of our new life in Christ, given to us by a loving
God who claims us as beloved children. In the sacrament of baptism a
small amount of water becomes the symbol of our old lives being washed
away and replaced with the new life of Christ. Whatever separates us
from God is forgiven and we are set free to serve God as Christ's
disciples. Anyone wishing to affirm their faith in God through Jesus
Christ may be baptized and received into church membership. Our
church recognizes all previous baptisms as sufficient signs of God's love
and grace. However, those who wish to confirm their faith commitment
are welcome to renew their baptismal vows during a worship service.
Children whose parents or guardians are church members may be
baptized. In baptizing infants or young children, we ask the parents
to affirm their own faith and their intention to raise their child to know
and love God. When children reach an age when they are ready to
accept the Christian faith as their own, they are "confirmed" as
church members.
Communion
Holy Communion repeats a ritual given to the disciples by Jesus just
before he was arrested and crucified. The bread and the cup
represent Christ's broken body and shed blood, reminders that he was
willing to die so we can be assured of God's love. The bread and
wine (or juice) also represent the bounty of the earth which sustains
life. Just as a hearty meal nourishes our bodies, communion serves
the Spirit of Christ to nourish our souls and strengthens us as
disciples. Communion is the feast which celebrates Christ's
resurrection and sustains his disciples in new life. Communion is
celebrated regularly in worship. All people who believe in the
saving love of God in Jesus Christ are welcome to receive the bread and
cup. This includes children who are baptized, who are encouraged to
participate. We serve grape juice rather than wine so all people can
be included.
Confirmation
The confirmation service includes a renewal of baptismal vows.
Marriage
Christian marriage is a lifelong commitment between two persons.
We believe God participates in a marriage to strengthen and encourage a
couple in a loving relationship. First Presbyterian is pleased to
make our sanctuary available for weddings for persons participating in
worship with us. Premarital counseling using Prepare materials is
required.
Memorial
Our pastor is available to assist families without local church
affiliation in honoring loved ones with an appropriate funeral or memorial
service. Services may be held in the church, in a funeral home, or
at the graveside.
